5 Pros and Cons For Video at Your Perfect Wedding Ceremony
There is plenty of debate about whether shooting video at the wedding is a good idea. Here’s what people say against it: 1
I want that moment to exist in time; it can’t be recaptured. Besides, it will be seared in my mind forever.
It’s a sacred ceremony and video has no business there.
It’s another step away from intimacy. Couples and communities already have a hard time sharing intimate moments, cameras don’t help.
Videography is too expensive. There are other things I want to spend money on.

Here are some arguments I think weigh in its favor.
If the video is looking to capture what’s meaningful at the ceremony then being able to review the video will simply bring those feelings of love intensely alive. If you choose a videographer who understands the sacredness of the event, it will show up on film. And don’t confuse false piety with sacredness. The sacredness of the ceremony is up to you and your celebrant to create. If you’re respectful of what you’re doing, that will show up on the film. The videographer can capture both the sweet and intimate moments between you and your beloved and between you and your community. You will never mind seeing the loving looks you share with your sweetie, or hearing the laughter of your community when a story is recounted. There will be moments you miss that the camera will not. There was a dancer at my wedding. The light was wrong. The dancer was fabulous; so was the video!
Good videography is expensive. And you want good videography. Pay for what you want. Give up the wedding favors.
Videography doesn’t need to be intrusive. Paying a professional will eliminate that problem. Since I know my videographers well, I’m sorry not to have more pictures of them at my wedding. They were completely elusive! But that’s the point. They know they’re not a focus in the wedding!
Steve and I watch this video. We will watch it on anniversaries and when we’re feeling rocky in the marriage and when we’re just totally, sappily in love. Video can be a good thing.
p.s. Six weeks after my wedding, my 93-year-old father died. He had spoken at our wedding. It was his last public outing with my 86-year-old mom who has dementia. There is nothing more precious than those last pictures of him and his beloved wife and the recording of his blessing. Because of the video, I was able to use his charge to Steve and me and to the community as the benediction at his funeral. What do you think that video is worth to our family?
