Sweeter Than
I bought corn today at a stand thinking that it would be sweeter than the corn sold?
at the grocery stores. I guess in Michigan this is the time when the corn is in, so I was thinking that by me buying it from a farm that it would taste more fresh and it turned out that it wasn’t even sweet. I was so disappointed. Why would corn not be sweet?
It could have been old or the variety they planted isn’t real sweet. Hot, dry weather makes corn less sweet also.
I only buy corn that has been picked that morning. I’m fortunate enough to have an Amish stand less than 1/2 hour travel from home. He grows everything chemical free and pesticide free and his corn is always picked fresh in the morning. It’s still wet with the dew when you get it.
Don’t store corn (even in the fridge) for more than 1 day. Don’t overcook it either.
And it’s possible, depending on the supply that your grocery store has, that the grocery corn is fresher than the farm stand especially if the grocery is buying corn from a local farmer (many do now) and the farm stand isn’t picking daily and selling old corn.
Ask questions and remember who is selling the fresh local stuff.
