Are scotty dogs (highland terriers) good pets?
I know two people both with highland terriers that really enjoy having them as pets. I might be getting a dog soon and I was wondering if a highland terrier would be a good choice? If not do you have any other suggestions?
First, what breed are you requesting information about, the Scottish Terrier, or the West Highland White Terrier? There are some similarities but lots of differences.

Both are diggers, barkers and are prone to some nasty skin issues. They both need grooming to maintain the coats–stripping for a show coat (preferred method) and clippering for a pet.
Scotties are the black ones, but the coat also comes in any shade of brindle and a blonde/reddish color called wheaten. White is not acceptable. Westies only come in white (although if the coat isn’t cared for it can get dingy and discolored.)
Scotties are typically more aloof and one person dogs than Westies. Westies are typically more friendly. As far as Scotties, I do not recommend this breed around small children. The Scot has very large, powerful jaws with large teeth. They do not tolerate beard or tail pulling and can be prone to biting. I can’t comment on this behavior for a Westie–I don’t have Westies.
Scotties are fiercely loyal dogs that will bond very tightly to only a very few people. They are known as the “diehard” and have a never-give-up attitude. Scotties have some genetic and health issues, so you need to research your breeder well (same for a Westie) and get a breeder that tests for genetic issues. Scotties may have bleeding disorders, jaw disorders, knee problems and a condition called Scottie cramp. This breed is also the most prone to bladder cancer. Scotties develop Cushing’s Disease at a higher rate than many breeds.
I’m giving some links so you can start your research. I think Scotties are the absolute best dogs, but I also know that their stubbornness and independence do not make them an ideal breed for most people.
