How long did we keep troops in Japan and Germany after WWII?
I’m trying to put perspective around 5 years in Iraq compared to historical wars we fought. I heard we had ground forces in place long after World War I and II.
I was with the 9th Marines, 3rd Marine division when in 1957 the Japanese asked the US government to remove all ground troop s from Japan, because we represented the occupation of Japan. Within weeks, all of the Marine infantry battalions were aboard ships and on their way to Okinawa.
The US still has navy and air force operations in Japan, but the ‘occupation troops’ are long gone from there.
