Pageant Dress Shell
Can superstretch fabric be bleached, or does anyone know of a sure way to dye it?
Superstretch is a polyester / spandex blend. I am trying to dye a pageant dress shell bodice. I have done 2 rounds of dyeing , and I need to know if there is another way to dye it other than the ways I have used OR if it can just be bleached back to white. Thanks so much in advance!
Polyester is almost impossible to dye at home. Polyesters need high heat and steam to allow the dye to penetrate the fibers. Don’t bleach polyester, it will destroy the fabric, it will be the same colour; it won’t make it white or even dingy yellow. The fabric will no longer be stretch as the spandex will harden and turn to dust -leaving your dress with an odd grey overcast look.
Here’s Paula Burch’s excellent site on how to dye garments at home. She’s quite blunt about dyeing polyester, saying don’t it. You really can destroy the dress and even if you managed to change the colour, you would also destroy the drape, the feel and the look of the fabric. http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/dispersedye.shtml
