Aquaponics: Placing Your Own Private Mini Eco-System
It sure is wonderful if we could nurture both fish and organic vegetables at the same time. The good news is, you can- with aquaponics. It is a system of growing fish and plants in an environment that is mutually beneficial for the two.
Generally speaking, aquaponics is a two-way system built to help one nurture fish and plant altogether. It is comprised of a merging of aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaponics is the growing of fish and hydroponics is the growing of plants that do not thrive in soil such as in clay balls or in gravel. It may sound so simple but there’s basically an intricate relationship going on between the two systems.
What happens is that plants will allow the recirculation of water while filtering it in the process. The fish manure on the other hand serves as organic fertilizers for the growing plant.This results in a real-life ecosystem. This type of system is conducive for places which have scarce water because the water used in the fish tanks are re-circulated thus water is conserved.
Freshwater fishes are ideal to grow in this man-made ecosystem. While some might prefer ornamental fish and some prefer edibles, either way they go, they will save money.
Let’s get into the nuts and bolts of what happens in an aquaponics mini eco system. Firstly, the fish that you grow there extracts manure that fertilizes the plants Ammonia is converted to nitrites and then to nitrates that nourishes your growing plants. The plants would serve as a sieve that filters the wastes thus pumping back clean water. This cycle goes on and the water is re-circulated.
So what do you need to be equipped with before setting up your own aquaponics systems?
Firstly, above all, you must choose a fish tank. The size of your fish tank should be relative to the number of fish you start growing as well as the number of plants. A clearance is required so that the oxygenation process goes smoothly.
The plants should thrive well in a watery environment, it should adapt to the lack of soil water. Lettuce is one of the best example for this. As you are now aware, this type of system is not applicable to plants that need soil to grow such as potatoes or carrots; this means that you should do some research to what plants that suitable to grow in your man-made ecosystem.
Aquaponics is a system that works like an aquarium water pump; filtering the water and pumping it back. Even the slightest damage could affect the system as a whole. You must do both; feed the fish and maintain the water level so that you can eat fresh fish meat and vegetables.
Now it would sound extremely simple to set up a fish tank but there’s more to this system than meets the eye. You need to have background on agriculture, on plumbing and so on to successfully consider all the factors that affect the whole system.
