Pets and Infants/Newborns?
I have a six month baby girl, and at least one more on the way in the next few months. In another question of mine, one suggestion was to get a pet.
Which pet would you suggest?
The only issue to take into account (other than the ages of my children) is that my wife is afraid of large dogs.
my suggestion is wait until both of your kids are a little older. We tried getting a puppy when our daughter was only 6 months old and it just didn’t work out. Puppies are great because you can work with them and train them the way you want them to be and older adoptable dogs can be unpredictable. But puppies when you have infants/toddlers is trying on the nerves with potty training, lack of sleep from their whinning on top of lack of sleep from babies waking up in the middle of the night, plus chewing everything in sight. Seriously think about it before you do it.
If you still get a pet, my suggestions is to go onto www.akc.org and read up on any dogs you are interested in. Also, call pet rescues and they can tell you if the breed they have works well with kids.
As for large dogs, we have a lab (older now as we got her before we got married) and she is FABULOUS with our daughter.
