Important Festivals On The Chinese Calendars
The celebration of the Chinese New Year commences from midway through the twelfth month of the year, to just about half way through the first month of the year. Given that the Chinese calendars use a lunar based system, their months correspond with the moon cycles instead of the cycle of the sun as in a solar calendars used in the West.
The Chinese New Year festival has, for thousands of years, been very significant to the Chinese way of life. It is very common in China to take up to two weeks off to ready one’s self for this event.
One popular belief surrounding this holiday is that the Gods will come to Earth from heaven and conduct inspections on family’s houses and homes. As a way to appease the Gods, families will carefully purify their homes in preparation for the festival.
It is also customary to set off firecrackers to ward off bad luck and evils spirits during this time. There is also a belief that fireworks are set off in the hopes to wake the sleeping dragon. Upon wakening the dragon will fly through the sky and bring the spring rains needed for the crops to grow. It is also traditional to throw firecrackers at the feet of the dragon dancers. This encourages him to stay awake for the duration of the celebration.
People are also known to write down on scrolls, messages of luck to leave on their neighbors, friends or families gates. Other activities traditional to this time of year are buying new clothes, paying off debts, painting doors and window sills, even getting a new haircut can symbolize the hopes and aspirations for the coming year.
The huge feasts prepared and eaten by families are very central to this festival. The foods that are cooked and eaten are symbols of long life and success in the coming year. Each and every food prepared can be traced back to the old Chinese ways of life. This festival provides a vital connection to remembering the old ways. At the beginning of the celebration lengthy noodles are consumed to help remember the long year that lies ahead.
Whether it is spring rolls, chicken, dumplings, or even a whole fish, everything eaten is a symbol of prosperity for the upcoming year. On the final day of the festival round, circular shaped dumplings were served symbolizing the full moon on the last night of the celebration.
