Hip hop fashion began over 20 years ago but has gone on to include a whole new way of life expressed through clothing and culture. New styles have emerged, keeping hip hop clothing at the top of the fashion list. Today, we are still seeing new styles being created, while at the same time, vintage hip hop fashion is a trend that promises to be around for many more decades.
Designer Tommy Hilfiger was among the first to bridge the gap between classic preppy and urban style. Instead of ignoring the hip hop community like many designers did, he created baggy clothing in bright colors and courted the most popular hip hop artists. Hilfiger became a household name in hip hop style when rapper Snoop Dogg performed on live television dressed in his clothing. Jogging suits, high top sneakers and gold necklaces were significant to hip hop fashion in the 1980s. Sports brands such as Adidas, Nike and Pro-Keds became popular among the hip hop community, too. Sportswear’s influence on hip hop style grew in the mid to late 1990s, when artists started wearing aspirational sportswear brands.
Jewelry, also known as “bling,” is widely used in hip hop fashion. Diamonds and gold rank among the top. Currently, jewelry culture became a prominent component of hip hop style. The word “bling” refers to ostentatious as well as elaborate jewelry donned by hip hop artists or installed onto their tooth caps and mobile phones. In the 1990s, the jewelry of choice was gold jewelry, but platinum took over in the middle of the decade.
