When it comes to saying their ‘wows’, modern brides are constantly looking for ways of pushing the envelope.
Be it a formally elegant occasion, contemporary sophistication or beachside casual, every bride really wants something that makes her special day one to remember. From the designer dress to the fresh flowers or the speeches to the setting or the bridesmaids to the band…every bride wants that special something that gets guests gasping.
Colourful flowers are one sure way of adding interest and intrigue to the nuptials, with more and more brides pushing the boundaries of convention. While white weddings will always be a firm favourite, bright and happy colours are taking centre stage.

We all know red is for romantics. Red is guaranteed to be striking and dramatic and it combines well with white. Historically considered more of a winter colour, it is eye-catching and a symbol of love and passion all year round! If red gets the green light, look for red roses, gerberas, pointsettia, berries and amaryllis for the flowers teamed with a red velvet or crushed silk gown.
Sunny yellow could be an uplifting and happy effect for a very special occasion. Perfect for spring or summer nuptials, yellow symbolises happiness and friendship. Yellow also combines well with white, blue and green and can be very flattering worn by a bride with an olive Mediterranean-type skin tone. For yellow wedding flowers, try freesias, daisies, daffodils, dahlias and roses.
Silver and gold weddings are also starting to shine. A sure bet if you want your wedding to shine out from the crowd. Metallics are in vogue, and beautiful golden or silver wedding gowns made from elaborate brocade or reflective satin or silk are on the winners’ podium. Golden flowers are not as easy to find, but the trick is to accessorise with ribbon, vases, even fake flowers. Silver flowers are easier, with beautiful shiny foliage like florists’ gum (eucalyptus) and westringia the perfect foil with white blooms.
Going green may be the environmentally friendly thing to do, but it will also have your guests green with envy if you go natural for your nuptials. Green opens up a whole vista of options and is really easy to work with. Pink and green are a gorgeous combination and it goes well with other colours too. Some green varieties are lisianthus, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums and calla lilies.
Black dresses are strutting their stuff on the catwalk and down the aisle as more daring brides make a bold statement. A bridal gown in black takes courage and confidence to wear, but can look striking and dramatic. Black flowers are more difficult, but certain blooms could be dyed by a professional florist such as Perth florist, Angel Flowers. Other accessories such as bows, ribbon, containers etc can be used to glam it up.
Brown is far from boring and is popular for autumn or winter weddings as it evokes a sense of warmth. Some brides are opting for gowns of luxurious chocolate velvet or brocade, while sleek, tailored bridal outfits look fantastic in rich silks, tweeds and wools. Brown flowers don’t have to be boring either, with gorgeous warm shades coming from foliage, proteas, pussy willow, magnolia and chrysanthemums.
