Looking For The Persol PO2996V?
Nearly 100 years ago in Turin, Italy, an optician called Giuseppe Ratti decided to venture into making glasses for those that needed their eyes protected most; pilots and sports drivers. From this came the ‘Protectors’. The Protectors were made with maximum comfort, protection and visual clearness. The Italian Military noticed these glasses and realised they would be perfect for their soldiers so bought them in their numbers.
Ther Persol brand was brought to life in the 1920s, after Ratti decided to produce mroe eyewear after the success of the Protectors. The name Persol comes from the Italian ‘per il sole’ meaning ‘for the sun’. Called this because of the distinctive yellow-brown lenses fitted to each model that offered maximum protection from the sun’s UV rays.
Another innovation came in the 30s, this time improving comfort. The Meflecto system was a patented design for the glasses stems. Comprising a metal or nylon cylinder, with a stainless steel core, these gave flexibility so would fit comfortably, firmly but not tightly to any face.
The real breakthrough for Persol was because of the Model 649; an oversized pair of sunglasses designed for tram drivers to protect their eyes. A famous film star of the time, Marcello Mastroianni, wore the 649s in a movie and people noticed Persol as a fashion brand. Other celebrities also caught on to the glasses, with Steve McQueen and Greta Garbo seen sporting them.
Today, the Persol brand are still popular as a fashion statement, with various well known faces seen sporting them such as Prince Charles and George Clooney, as well as being a practical eyewear for sportspeople.
One of the boldest designs from Persol is the Persol PO2996V. Slightly oversized and rounded in shape, these glasses make a strong, stand-out statement. The silver arrow and distinctive bridge shape make these unmistakably Persol. Available in several colours, the most popular is the quirky ‘Green Striped Brown’.
Single vision, varifocal and Transitions lenses can all be fitted to these frames. Different thicknesses are available as are different coatings which offer varying effects.
