Examining The Options Of Bedding For Girls And A Move Away From More Traditional Designs
Throughout the years manufacturers have traditionally gone with themes such as dolls, Disney films and pop stars when targeting bedding at girls. These kinds of designs most commonly incorporate colours like pinks, reds and yellows, leaving colours that are perceived to be more masculine alone. Most girls will be able to find bedding within these themes that suit their needs, but there are some with different interests that often touch on what are considered masculine areas. Read on for suggestions on three themes of girls bedding that stand out from the normal options.
Cultural
The opportunity for travel is becoming ever more available and as your children grow into young adults there is a good chance that they will undertake some backpacking themselves. Choosing cultural bedding is a great way of broadening your daughter’s horizons and piquing her interest in different societies and cultures. A great way of doing this would be to go for designs that depict famous structures from around the world, such as Machu Picchu, the Egyptian pyramids or the Taj Mahal.
Musical
Most young girls will develop an interest in music, which is why pop star themed bedding sells so well. However, there are other themes that are based on music, but which don’t deal with the stereotypical boy band or Hannah Montana. Designs like these tend to focus on musical objects, such as guitars, DJ decks and headphones. These kinds of bedding themes are a good way of getting girls interested in the creation of music and could lead to them becoming involved in the music scene in some way.
Abstract art
The final suggestion that we would like to put forwards is that of abstract art, which covers a mass of varying themes, from busy mosaics to crazy floral patterns. With so many themes available in this area it can take a while to find the right one for your needs, but the plus side is that you are sure to find one you like eventually.

Prep: A Novel $9.29 Curtis Sittenfeld’s debut novel, Prep, is an insightful, achingly funny coming-of-age story as well as a brilliant dissection of class, race, and gender in a hothouse of adolescent angst and ambition. Lee Fiora is an intelligent, observant fourteen-year-old when her father drops her off in front of her dorm at the prestigious Ault School in Massachusetts. She leaves her animated, affectionate family in South Bend, Indiana, at least in part because of the boarding school’s glossy brochure, in which boys in sweaters chat in front of old brick buildings, girls in kilts hold lacrosse sticks on pristinely mown athletic fields, and everyone sings hymns in chapel. As Lee soon learns, Ault is a cloistered world of jaded, attractive teenagers who spend summers on Nantucket and speak in their own clever shorthand. Both intimidated and fascinated by her classmates, Lee becomes a shrewd observer of-and, ultimately, a participant in-their rituals and mores. As a scholarship student, she constantly feels like an outsider and is both drawn to and repelled by other loners. By the time she’s a senior, Lee has created a hard-won place for herself at Ault. But when her behavior takes a self-destructive and highly public turn, her carefully crafted identity within the community is shattered. Ultimately, Lee’s experiences-complicated relationships with teachers; intense friendships with other girls; an all-consuming preoccupation with a classmate who is less than a boyfriend and more than a crush; conflicts with her parents, from whom Lee feels increasingly distant, coalesce into a singular portrait of the painful and thrilling adolescence universal to us all. From the Hardcover edition. |

Perfectly Prep $39.95 Although New England boarding schools have been educating America's elite for four generations, they, along with their privileged students, rarely have been the subject of study. Living in a senior boys' dorm at a co-ed school, Sarah Chase was able to witness the inner workings of student culture and the dynamics of their peer groups. In an environment of ivy-covered buildings, institutional goals of excellence and aspirations to Ivy League colleges, the boys and girls acted extremely masculine or feminine. While girls typically worked themselves into a state of sleep deprivation and despair during exam period, the boys remained seemingly unconcerned and relaxed. As much as the girls felt pressure to be "cute" and "perfect," the boys felt pressure to be "bad ass" and the "best at everything." Tellingly, the boys thought that "it would suck" to be a girl, while over one third of the girls wanted to be male if given the chance. From her vantage point of sitting in the back of the football and field hockey buses, attending prom and senior pranks, and listening to how students described their academic and social pressures, competition, rumors, backstabbing, sex, and partying, Chase discovered that these boys and girls shared similar values, needs and desires despite their highly gendered behavior. The large class, ethnic and individual differences in how the students perform their genders reveal the importance of culture in development and the power of individual agency. This book examines the price of privilege and uncovers how student culture reflects and perpetuates society and institutional power structures and gender ideologies. |
