Online sites that allow one to be one’s own travel agent are interesting. One may not be able to afford to travel continuously but it is interesting to study different options. Vicarious flights can be fascinating and a lot cheaper than the real thing.
For example, one can go online and work out how to get from a town in South Africa to Beijing. This may be his favourite city in the world and one he would like to visit if he had the funds and the time to travel. The possibilities and the imaginary experiences are available at no cost at all.
There are four different local carriers from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg at prices ranging from 1655 to 1836 rands. Since they would all link with his connecting flight he could take the cheapest for this short flight and save himself R181. This in itself is a source of some satisfaction.

Another Middle Eastern carrier goes first to Doha before linking swiftly with another flight for Beijing. This entails the most wondrous flight over the Himalaya mountain range. If it is daylight one can gaze down upon the snowy tops of the highest mountains, and this is a most exciting experience, worth a higher fare.
The flight into China takes one over an economic and political transformation. Mao’s misguided policy of killing insects, rats and flies is manifest in a certain deadness in the environment but has one approaches the massive conurbation of Beijing there is evidence of more enlightened policies with trees growing and signs of economic dynamism.
The Great Wall of China snakes its way across the country, and the wonders of the City await. The Forbidden City and Summer Palace vie with modern attractions such as the Olympic village. This is a city and a country of inexhaustible interest, both modern and ancient. But from way back in Port Elizabeth one may already have booked onward flights, perhaps to Moscow or to other Chinese cities such as Harbin. Once again different airlines and flight options exist, and if one planned to visit in January it would be possible to see the annual ice festival, famous throughout the world.
