Cabomba pulcherrima Purple Cabomba $1.99 Purple Cabomba ( Cabomba pulcherrima ) is composed of fine, delicate strands of fan shaped, purple and dark green leaves. These plants add interest and beauty to planted tanks, but require intense light and high nutrient levels to remain lush and colored. Cabomba is an excellent oxygenator for aquariums and ponds. It grows quickly and can also help to keep nutrient and nitrate levels lower. Purple Cabomba will not be shipped to ME, VT, MA, WA due to state regulations. Bunched plants are typically sold as cuttings that are bound together with a metal plant weight or rubber bands. These individual stalks can be planted by inserting the end of the stalk into the substrate, either individually or – with some plants – in groupings of several stalks. Most bunch plants do not have roots but may grow roots in time. They can be easily pruned by trimming the stalk at the desired height. The trimmings can then be planted as well if desired. Some bunched plants do not need to be planted and may be allowed to float on the water’s surface. |

Tamaria stria Purple Starfish $59.99 The Purple Starfish ( Tamaria stria ) is uniquely magenta to royal purple, its texture fine and velvety. The legs along the underside of this starfish are lighter pink in color. These starfish are similar to and are sometimes mis-identified by some as Linckia Starfish. Starfish in general are very sensitive to changes in water quality and conditions. If temperature, salinity or other water parameters change quickly, starfish cannot regulate the change and are often damaged or killed. Be sure to acclimate carefully and while doing water changes, make sure the “new” water is as close as possible to the “old” water in its parameters. Most starfish are scavengers. Some may prey on snails and invertebrates while others eat detritus, leftover food, and tiny organisms in and on the substrate and rockwork. Fromia and Linckia starfish are among the group of stars that are considered safe for corals (although Fromia starfish are thought to feed on sponges) and invertebrates while thicker-bodied stars like Chocolate Chip and Bahama stars will prey on snails, corals and other stationary inverts. Danio roseus Purple Passion Danio $2.99 The Purple Passion Danio has a definite lavender color with deeper purple on the flanks. Danios are hardy fish, and can be used as “starter fish” for new aquariums. They are schooling fish that should be kept in groups. Danios are peaceful fish, and can be kept with most other community species. They are very active swimmers and are constantly on the move. These fish can be fed most flake and small pelleted foods, and well as frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms as treats. Danios will generally occupy the upper portion of the water column, so a floating or slow-sinking food is a better choice than quick sinking varieties. |

Purple Mushroom Rock $119.99 Mushrooms are small, round anemones that show many different colors and patterns. Individuals form compact colonies over reef rock which resemble some hard corals. The surface of the polyp can be tightly beaded like a carpet anemone or smooth in appearance. The color of surface can be striped, solid in color, edged with a different color, or have any other number of patterns and variations. The mushrooms range in color from brown to green to blue and in rare cases orange or red. The mushroom rocks sold here are purple in overall coloration. The shade of purple may vary, as well as accent colors on each individual mushroom. These mushrooms are carnivorous and photosynthetic. While they will take food from the water column and even feed on larger items like brine shrimp, they benefit from higher lighting and will show brighter colors under more intense light. They should be given ample space in aquariums as they may damage other corals with prolonged contact. It is common for an individual mushroom to come off of a rock and settle somewhere else in the aquarium or for a mushroom to split into multiple mushroom to spread or start a new colony. Though mushrooms come in a variety of colors and patterns, they grow in colonies on rocks and therefore there will normally be only one type of mushroom on each rock. The type, size of individual mushrooms and number of mushrooms on the rock may vary. If certain types or colors are desired, please contact the Livestock Department at 1-877-367-4377 for availability. |

Hoplolatilus purpureus Purple Tilefish $79.99 The Purple Tilefish ( Hoplolatilus purpureus ) has a vibrant purple body with a dark edged forked tail. Tilefish resemble some gobies but are actually from a different family, Malacanthidae . Like most of their goby relatives, tilefish are long and slender with smooth bodies and rounded heads. Tilefish grow larger in general; some species can get close to two feet in length although the most common aquarium species only reach about 4-6 inches. They are found higher in the water column but can quickly retreat into rockwork if threatened. Tilefish will usually accept a large variety of meaty foods with time and should be given a varied diet of items like shrimp, scallop, clam, fish flesh and similar items. They can be kept with other moderate-temperament fish but may become stressed with boisterous tankmates and may not feed. Stressed or frightened tilefish have also been known to jump from the aquarium so a secure, tight-fighting lid is important. Tilefish are often shy when first introduced to the aquarium and can be sensitive to transport and changes in water quality. Although tilefish do not normally prey on corals, they need plenty of open swimming room and may be stung by some corals and other animals like anemones. They may also eat some ornamental inverts like crabs and shrimp. As such, they are best housed in an open fish-only system with rockwork to retreat to if threatened. This is a Restricted item and is not covered by our Arrive Alive 5-Day Guarantee. Please visit the Guarantee Policy and Restricted Species webpages for more information. |

Goniopora sp. Purple Flowerpot Coral $59.99 Flower Pot Corals are tempting, spectacular corals in the aquarium. However, their long term survival is dependent on the right conditions. Only the advanced reef aquarist should attempt keeping this species of coral. Expanded, this coral forms a ball of large tentacles, looking much like a blooming bunch of flowers. Most commonly found in shades of green or tan, rare specimens are found in red and purple. Branching structures are also sometimes found with the colonies on the ends of thick, bulbous branches. Goniopora sp. corals are very closely related to another group of corals, Alveopora sp. , with the primary difference being tentacle length and the number of fringes around the rim of each tentacle. Goniopora sp. corals usually have longer tentacles and 24 fringes around each rim while Alveopora sp. only has 12. Alveopora sp. also usually has a more opaque color than the more translucent Goniopora sp. . Both may be known as Flower Pot Corals. Place this coral in medium to high light and medium water movement. Make sure that the coral is secure, as it is prone to falling when expanded. Occassionally, a clownfish may attempt to host in Goniopora sp. corals since their appearance in the water resembles an anemone. This often results in damage to or even loss of the coral since the clownfish’s actions often damage the flesh of the coral where it is rubbed against the coral’s skeleton. |

Chromis scotti Purple Chromis – Juvenile $6.99 The juvenile Purple Chromis ( Chrysiptera scotti ) is very similar to the Springer’s Damsel, C. springeri . The body is purple and with less markings on the Purple Chromis than the Springer’s Damsel. The pelvic fins on the Purple Chromis may be black and they have a block horizontal stripe through their eyes. Adults are brownish-grey with lighter undersides. Damsels and chromis both come from the Pomacentridae family, which they share with Clownfish, a close relative and another very popular group of aquarium fish. Their temperament can range from very peaceful to quite aggressive and territorial. Chromis (fish from the genus Chromis ) tend to be more peaceful than the rest but can also be more delicate. Other common genuses of damsels include Amblyglyphidodon , Chrysiptera , Dascyllus , Neoglyphidodon , Pomacentrus , Stegastes and others. These fish are generally not picky eaters. In the aquarium, they will usually feed on flakes and pellets but should also be given fresh or frozen algaes and meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, planktons, krill, shrimp, scallop and similar items. Damsels can become very territorial as they become established in the aquarium. Some species will defend their territory especially aggressively; use caution when stocking the aquarium since their small sizes can be deceiving; mature or established damsels may pick on smaller or weaker fish or on new arrivals. Some damsels retain the same appearance throughout their entire lives while others undergo a radical color change as they mature from juveniles to adults. A few may get more colorful as adults but most change from very colorful juveniles to bland, more subdued adults. Visit That Fish Blog for more information from our marine biologists on clownfish and damselfish and many other aquarium-related topics! |
