For residents, Wal-Mart might be a hard sell (The State)
More than 300 residents filled a large hall in Olympia Monday night, a
majority urging Columbia City Council to reject – but some favoring – the
construction of a future Wal-Mart shopping complex astride Assembly Street in
one of the city’s most flood-prone and traffic-choked areas.
Opponents raised specters of damaging floods, traffic snarls caused by trains,
trucks and football, local businesses destroyed and jobs lost. Supporters
talked of jobs gained, the “highest and best use” of the property and that it
wasn’t city government’s business to interfere in what should be a free-market
decision.
Although Monday’s hearing was said to likely be a mere formality before a
final council decision tonight approving the Wal-Mart complex, Mayor Steve
Benjamin indicated at the hearing’s end that concerns expressed may cause
council to delay its decision.
“There are still a lot of questions,” Benjamin said.
But still, Benjamin indicated, council could make a final decision when it
meets at city hall at 6 p.m. At issue: whether to sell a crucial piece of
city-owned property in a 23-acre site to Bright-Meyers, an Atlanta developer
which has long bought properties for Walmart. (The giant retailer has not
