Beach Portrait
For beach portraits is it better to use a white umbrella with speedlight/ the speedlight on top of the camera?
Exactly what Tim, above, said.
Direct flash from the camera looks terrible. IMHO, it should only ever be used if you have to get the shot and you just have no other options.
If I didn’t have anything more powerful than a standard flash-gun, outdoors, in bright sunlight, I would bounce light from a reflector to get fill, or face the model into the sunlight and use a scrim in front of him/her to diffuse the direct sunlight. If I didn’t have a reflector, I’d then go for a soft-box close-in, or barring that, a shoot-through umbrella. Even an undiffused strobe off-camera – possibly at a 45 degree angle from the model – will look much better than on-camera flash – but that would be a last resort.
